FIB 2019 BENICÀSSIM (THURSDAY’S REVIEW)

The 25th edition of FIB Benicàssim has millions of acts and tons of fun ready for you. FIB 2019 Benicàssim started off yesterday with artists such as FATBOY SLIM, ACTION BRONSON, MARINA, KODALINE, FONTAINES D.C. and NOVIO CABALLO, together with a bunch of awesome DJ sets.

After local band Novio Caballo started FIB 2019 and warmed up Carrefour Stage (main stage yesterday, but second stage from tomorrow) with their sassy and cheeky songs, Fontaines D.C., from Dublin, Ireland, presented their post-punk debut studio album, Dogrel (2019), with songs like Sha Sha Sha, Television Screens and Too Real. Lead singer Grian Chatten together with Carlos O’Connell, Conor Curley, Conor Deegan and Tom Coll, got very good reviews from media such as NME, The Guardian and The Times.
We could witness why was that.

Electropop singer, Marina, delighted the audience with hits such as Handmade Heaven, Hollywood, Enjoy Your Life, I Am Not a Robot, Superstar, Froot, Orange Trees, Primadonna and Baby. Welsh, but living in London, England, she got everyone to dance to the tunes of her fourth album, Love + Fear (2019). Marina, 33, in pure excitement explained she had been more than ten years working but it was her first FIB Benicàssim. She combined pop, dance, electropop and new wave in a recipe that a few years ago took her on tour with Katy Perry, and with Coldplay, as opening act. Together with her last album, The Family Jewels (2010), Electra Heart (2012) and Froot (2015) shined making the audience sing along, dance and ‘enjoy their lives’.

From Swords, Dublin, Ireland, indie rock band, Kodaline presented their 3rd album, Politics of Living (2018), at FIB 2019. Steve Garrigan brought fabulous tunes such as Follow Your Fire -show opener-, Brand New Day, Ready, Honest, Head Held High, The One, Love Like This, Wherever You Are, All I Want and High Hopes, show closer. Even though the band is taking some steps towards mainstream pop-rock, they still keep a certain indie folk scent. After their early days, as 21 Demands, they renamed the band and released In a Perfect World (2013) and Coming Up for Air (2015). With their last album, Politics of Living (2018), and their solidity on stage is turning them into one of the best international pop-rock acts these days.
Frontman Steve Garrigan showd his skills: vocals, rhythm guitars, keyboards (‘Nord stage’ keyboard hidden inside a tiny ‘grand piano’), mandolin…

Next, Action Bronson, from Flushing, New York, shot the public his furious hip hop. He presented, somewhat half an hour late, his fifth album, White Bronco (2018).

Fatboy Slim was in charge of closing this first night at Benicàssim. The Housemartins’ bassist (long, long time ago) brought his big beat, acid house, trip hop and nu-funk, from Bromley, Kent, England, to the fibers, who would not stop dancing until the show had finished. Eat Sleep Rave Repeat, Praise You, The Rockafeller Skank and many other
