FIB 2019 BENICÀSSIM (SATURDAY’S REVIEW)

Yesterday, we had one of the best summer nights at FIB 2019 Benicàssim with magnificent artists such as KINGS OF LEON, JESS GLYNNE, AJ TRACEY, BLOSSOMS, YOU ME AT SIX, BELAKO, CAROLINA DURANTE, BAKERMAT, CORA NOVOA, KOKOSHCA, PROJECT PABLO, SEA GIRLS, BAWRUT, JOAKIM, LA ZOWI, ALIEN TANGO, PEANESS, and many more!!!

Pop punk band from Weybridge, Surrey, You Me at Six, presented their last album, VI (2018), at #FIB2019. Formed in 2004, they have toured with groups such as Thirty Seconds to Mars and Paramore. Josh Franceschi (lead vocals), Max Helyer (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Chris Miller (lead guitar), Matt Barnes (bass guitar, backing vocals) and Dan Flint (drums, percussion, sampling) also played songs from their albums Take Off Your Colours (2008), Hold Me Down (2010), Sinners Never Sleep (2011), Cavalier Youth (2014) and Night People (2017).

Their performance was very sharp and clear-cut on the stage with songs such as Fast Forward (Franceschi had difficulties to warm up his voice but he succeeded), Lived a Lie, Underdog, Night People, Fresh Start Fever, Give, 3AM, Take on the World (when he asked the audience to stand on someone else’s shoulders), I O U, Reckless (frontman gave a nod to The Killers’ When You Were Young because the sequence of chords is very similar), Straight to My Head and Room to Breathe (show closer).

Blossoms, formed in 2013 in Stockport, England, giving their best indie pop-rock at #FIB2019, with songs from their self titled album, Blossoms (2016), nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2017, and Cool Like You (2018). Tom Ogden (lead vocals, rhythm guitars, piano, songwriter), Charlie Salt (bass, acoustic guitar, backing vocals), Josh Dewhurst (lead guitars, percussion), Joe Donovan (drums) and Myles Kellock (keyboards, synthesizers, piano, backing vocals) were on the BBC’s Sound Of new music list for 2016.

The best moments of Blossoms’ performance on the main stage were the opening, with At Most a Kiss, I Can’t Stand It, Cool Like You (which sounded just like if Suede’s Brett Anderson run a disco on a Saturday night), Blow, Honey Sweet, My Favourite Room (with leader Tom Ogden’s acoustic solo) Unfaithful, There’s a Reason Why (I Never Returned Your Calls) and Charlemagne (show closer).

They also played New Order’s Blue Monday (instrumental intro only) and David Bowie’s, Let’s Dance -warmly welcomed by the audience.

Kings of Leon, American Southern rock band formed in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1999. The band composed of three Followill brothers Caleb (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Jared (bass, keyboards, backing vocals), Nathan (drums, percussion, backing vocals)and their cousin Matthew (lead guitar, keyboards, backing vocals) exhibited their blend of Southern rock, blues and alternative rock.

The group achieved success including four Grammy Award wins and several platinum albums.

They presented their seventh album, Walls (2016) convoyed by a bunch of songs mainly from their albums Because of the Times (2007), Only by the Night (2008) and Come Around Sundown (2010), for a crowded main stage Las Palmas – Radio 3 at FIB 2019 last night.

The audience was absolutely captivated by the atmosphere created by the Followills, plenty of hypnotic guitar sounds interwoven with frontman Caleb deep vocals.

Their setlist was a parade of hits such as Crawl, Find Me, Radioactive, Molly’s Chambers, On Call, Over, Closer, Mary, Sex on Fire, Notion, Pyro, Back Down South, Use Somebody and Waste a Moment.
